Fellowship Director: Steve Messe, MD
Our vascular neurology fellowship program was founded in 1994 and is ACGME accredited. We accept 3 fellows each year, and fellowship training may last for one or two years depending on the individual career plans and needs of the fellow. We have a long history of training successful vascular neurologists, and are proud of our former fellows! Click here to see a list of our former and current fellows.
First year fellows spend 6 months on the inpatient Stroke Service where they lead daily morning rounds with the faculty, provide supervision of residents and medical students, and respond to acute stroke calls. Fellows spend 1 month per year on the Neurointensive care service and 2 weeks on neurorehabiliation. There are 3.5 months of elective time which are distributed according to the individual interests of the fellow and may include rotations focusing on ICU, research, neurosonology, neurosurgery, or interventional neuroradiology (click here for ACGME core goals of each rotation). When not covering the inpatient stroke service, fellows attend clinic with stroke attendings 2 afternoons per week. Night and weekend call is divided between the fellows and stroke attendings. Additional educational experiences include didactic lectures, a weekly stroke case conference and a weekly journal club, reading assignments, and personal mentoring. Fellows who elect to undertake a second year of training will have further time to pursue an academic research program while honing their clinical skills.
